How to Get to Boracay: Complete Transportation Guide

Getting to Boracay involves a combination of flights, boats, and land transport. This complete guide walks you through every step of the journey to paradise.

Overview: The Journey to Boracay

Boracay is an island, which means getting there requires a combination of air and sea travel. The most common route is to fly into either Caticlan Airport (MPH) or Kalibo International Airport (KLO), then take a tricycle to the jetty port, a boat to Boracay, and a tricycle to your accommodation. The total journey from Manila takes between 2.5 to 5 hours depending on your chosen route.

Option 1: Fly to Caticlan (Recommended)

Caticlan Airport is just 15 minutes from the Caticlan Jetty Port, making it the fastest and most convenient gateway to Boracay. Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia all operate daily flights from Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Flight time is approximately 50–60 minutes. The airport is small and has limited facilities, but the speed advantage over Kalibo is significant.

Upon arrival, take a tricycle (₱50–₱80) to the Caticlan Jetty Port. Purchase your terminal fee (₱100) and environmental fee (₱75) before boarding a banca (outrigger boat) to Boracay. The boat crossing takes 10–15 minutes and costs ₱30–₱45 per person. Upon arrival at Cagban Jetty Port in Boracay, take a tricycle (₱25–₱50 per person) to your hotel.

Option 2: Fly to Kalibo (Budget Option)

Kalibo Airport handles more international flights, particularly chartered flights from China, South Korea, and Taiwan. Flights from Manila are often cheaper than Caticlan, but the transfer to Boracay takes significantly longer — approximately 2–2.5 hours by bus or van from Kalibo to the Caticlan Jetty Port.

Several shuttle bus operators run direct services from Kalibo Airport to the jetty port for ₱200–₱250 per person. The scenic drive through Aklan Province is pleasant, passing through small towns and farmland before reaching the coast.

From Manila by Sea (Long Route)

For budget travelers with time to spare, 2GO Travel operates weekly ferry services from Manila (Batangas Port) to Caticlan. The journey takes approximately 10–12 hours overnight. This option is far less popular for tourists due to the time involved, but it's an adventure in itself and significantly cheaper.

Getting Around Boracay

Once on the island, getting around is easy and affordable. Tricycles are the primary mode of transport, operating on fixed routes. The main road runs parallel to White Beach and is not accessible by private car — this helps keep the beach area relatively free from traffic. E-Trikes (electric tricycles) were introduced as part of Boracay's rehabilitation and are the standard transport along the beachfront road.

Walking is the best way to explore White Beach itself. The entire beachfront from Station 1 to Station 3 can be walked in about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. For longer distances — such as getting to Bulabog Beach on the other side of the island — take a tricycle which costs ₱100–₱150.

Important Fees to Know

Upon departure from Caticlan Jetty Port, you'll pay a terminal fee of ₱100 and an environmental fee of ₱75 (valid for the duration of your stay). Upon arrival at Boracay, there's no additional fee. Keep your environmental fee receipt as it may be checked. Make sure to have exact change in Philippine Pesos as not all counters accept cards.
