Why Bulabog Beach is World-Famous for Kitesurfing
While White Beach steals most of the island's attention, the eastern coast of Boracay harbors a different kind of paradise for wind sports enthusiasts. Bulabog Beach — just 15 minutes by tricycle from White Beach — is consistently rated among the top five kitesurfing destinations in Asia, and annually hosts international competitions that draw professional riders from around the world.
The beach's east-facing orientation perfectly captures the Habagat season (southwest monsoon) winds that blow consistently from May through October, delivering the 15–25 knot winds that kite surfers dream of. The relatively shallow, flat water inshore (1–2 meters for several hundred meters) is ideal for learning, while the deeper open water offshore provides space for more advanced maneuvers.
Best Season for Kitesurfing
The Habagat kitesurfing season runs from May through October, with June, July, and August offering the most reliable and consistent winds. September and October can bring stronger, gustier conditions. November marks the transition — winds become lighter and more variable as the Amihan season approaches.
Counterintuitively, the rainy season (Habagat) is actually Boracay's premium time for kitesurfing despite some rough weather. Kite surfers don't mind rain while already in the water, and the consistent wind patterns more than compensate for the occasional shower.
Kitesurfing Schools and Courses
Bulabog Beach has an established community of IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) certified schools offering professional instruction in English. Major operators include Hangin Kite Center, Funboard Center, and several independent certified instructors.
Complete Beginner Course (IKO Level 1–2): ₱12,000–₱18,000 for approximately 9 hours of instruction spread over 3 days. Covers theory, body dragging in the water, kite control, and body board riding with a kite. By the end, most students can ride independently in ideal conditions.
Advanced Course / Refresher: ₱5,000–₱8,000 for specialized coaching on tricks, upwind riding, or specific techniques.
Equipment Rental: ₱1,500–₱2,500 per day for certified riders. Premium modern kites from brands like Cabrinha, Duotone, and North are available.
The International Funboard Cup
Boracay hosts the annual International Funboard Cup, one of Asia's premier kite and windsurfing competitions. The event typically takes place in August and draws professional athletes and enthusiasts from across the region. Spectating is free and the beach atmosphere during the event is electric — an extraordinary bonus if your trip coincides.
Tips for Kite Surfers in Boracay
Always use a certified instructor if you're new to kitesurfing — the power of a large kite is not to be underestimated. The kitesurfing area on Bulabog is designated and marked, so non-kiting swimmers and boats should not be present. Right of way rules apply (kite surfers have right of way over boats). Wind forecasts from windguru.cz or windy.com are useful for planning sessions. The beach has several cafes and equipment repair shops for post-session refreshments and gear needs.
